Today, a maranic event called Shimanami Surround was held from Setoda-cho, Ikuchi-jima to the three islands of Ikuchi-jima, Innoshima, and Mukaishima on the Shimanami Kaido.
This is the first time for me to know the word “maranic”!
The word “maranic” is a coined word combining the words ‘marathon’ and “picnic,” which I learned for the first time this time,
It seems to be a sporting event where participants run or walk at their own pace while enjoying the scenery and local culture, rather than competing for position or time.
The maranic seems to be held all over Japan, but this year seems to be the first time it has been held on the Shimanami Kaido.
There are three courses of 24 km, 60 km, and 100 km, and the islands to be visited seem to change depending on the course.
The race starts at 5:00 a.m. and ends at 9:00 p.m. As someone who has never participated in a marathon before, I have a lot of respect for the runners joining this event.
Walking around town, it was good to see the runners enjoying themselves and the locals calling out to them, “Go for it!

I got to know about this event about 3 months ago when I received a reservation to stay at Casa Ikuchijima and was communicating with the customer via message, I was told about the event and made the reservation because the location of the accommodation was very accessible for those who wanted to participate!
In fact, one of the reasons for Casa Ikuchijima’s popularity is its accessibility. It is a 10-minute walk from the port, a 5-minute walk from the center of the shopping district, and a 3-minute walk from Kosanji Temple, the island’s most popular tourist attraction.
Most of the events start and end in Setoda area in Ikuchijima island, so people who participate in events choose Casa Ikuchijima because they can sleep in until just before the event and return immediately after the event!
There are many more Shimanami Kaido and Ikuchijima based events coming up in the future, so please book in advance if you plan to attend!
