New furniture has arrived!

Last week I was in Kyoto! The purpose was to pick up a work desk!

I had to go to Kyoto in my own camper to pick it up, as it was not available for mailing.

At Casa Ikuchijima, I try to use furniture that is handcrafted by individuals,

This desk in particular was ordered about a year ago from a hermit-like woodworker we met in Kyoto!

He is a heavy smoker with a basic tank top, long beard and gray hair.

In fact, Casa Ikuchijima uses many of this hermit craftsman’s works (benches, desks, etc.).

Each piece is quite unique and eccentric, and most of them are made of driftwood.

This desk has driftwood legs, a shelf under the top made of driftwood, a red pine top, and 70 glass decorations, all of which were found washed up in the ocean.

I love his work and it fits absurdly well with Japanese traditional old house and has good taste.

He says that in the old days (maybe the Edo period?), there was a culture of breaking unused bowls and pouring them into the sea, and these bowls are still washed up in the sea.

It is indeed interesting to see the decorations, some of which look like the patterns of bowls that look quite old.

If you visit, please take a look at the work desk and bench in the living room and the desk in the guest room, which are his works!
