Last week I was in Kyoto! The purpose was to pick up a work desk!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had to go to Kyoto in my own camper to pick it up, as it was not available for mailing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Casa Ikuchijima, I try to use furniture that is handcrafted by individuals,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This desk in particular was ordered about a year ago from a hermit-like woodworker we met in Kyoto!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a heavy smoker with a basic tank top, long beard and gray hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, Casa Ikuchijima uses many of this hermit craftsman’s works (benches, desks, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each piece is quite unique and eccentric, and most of them are made of driftwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This desk has driftwood legs, a shelf under the top made of driftwood, a red pine top, and 70 glass decorations, all of which were found washed up in the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love his work and it fits absurdly well with Japanese traditional old house and has good taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He says that in the old days (maybe the Edo period?), there was a culture of breaking unused bowls and pouring them into the sea, and these bowls are still washed up in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is indeed interesting to see the decorations, some of which look like the patterns of bowls that look quite old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you visit, please take a look at the work desk and bench in the living room and the desk in the guest room, which are his works!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
